What’s Complex about Hybrid Cloud?

What’s Complex about Hybrid Cloud?

Which workloads should you migrate to cloud? When? In what order? Which providers and services should you use? How can you control and manage cloud service usage? What about security? These are just some of the matters you need to address as you embark on your hybrid cloud journey.

As enterprises increase their leverage of hybrid cloud architectures, the level of complexity also increases. Enterprises considering a cloud migration must choose among multiple service and deployment models, decide which workloads are best suited to the cloud, and assure that their chosen cloud model provides enterprise-level connectivity, security, compliance and service-level agreements.

Here are some of the matters you need to keep in mind:

  • There is no one-size fits-all approach to hybrid computing and the success of any hybrid cloud initiative depends greatly on the planning and implementation process.
  • The level of complexity increases; instead of managing a relatively confined infrastructure architecture, a hybrid cloud environment means many different architectures to manage that span between their corporate data center and the public cloud.
  • Mixing different clouds also creates challenges associated with governance and compliance, which need to be addressed in the beginning, so as to avoid greater complexity, security risks, and integration problems later on.
  • Application re-architecting may be required to reduce latency and ensure consistent user experience, while enterprises may also need to invest in tools so as to enable them to manage infrastructures across multiple providers and networks.

From infrastructure and app modernization, to integrating all elements of the IT stack, there are obviously multiple parameters for a successful implementation. Enterprises often find themselves having to make a choice between productivity and portability, depending upon whether they choose a by-design or by-accident approach to hybrid.

What to do then? Start by asking yourself some key questions before you embark on your organization’s hybrid cloud journey, questions that will help you navigate as you proceed:

  1. What is your overall cloud strategy?
  2. What is your cloud adoption?
  3. Do you have a unified cloud governance?
  4. Do you have unified cloud securities?
  5. Do you have end-to-end operation for the entire cloud environment?

Answering these questions will you build the hybrid cloud infrastructure you need to ensure you don’t suffer from digital disruption, but rather drive it.
